Modern or contemporary architecture? What’s the difference?
By | 21st Apr 16

We enjoy keeping up to date with architecture and design trends. As many of us are not experts, this month we explore some design jargon to keep you in the loop. We’re so lucky to have talented architects and designers in Melbourne so understanding the difference between contemporary and modern design may help if you are looking to knock down and rebuild or renovate your investment.

So…is it contemporary or is it modern… is there even a difference? In fact there is, and it’s simple to understand.

Modern Architecture came to be in the early- mid 20th Century. Modern architecture is unique in that it didn’t follow a trend from a previous style. Brick facades were the mainstay in pre 19th Century architecture, where modern facades are known to be more whitewash simple, and with typically large windows and linear characteristics.

Contemporary Architecture can be defined as what is being produced now. In a sense it’s not so much a style trend but what is currently being built and designed at this present time.
