Moving home soon? Read more on how to relocate without the stress

Have you had a stressful move situation where you may have left something in a cupboard or your favourite gnome in the backyard? Moving will always has an element of dread for most people but it doesn’t have to be too stressful. Start your to-do list early, give yourself enough time to pack properly and you will arrive on moving day with less tension than if you didn’t plan properly. We have compiled some handy tips from the many house moves we have done over the years to help you with your next relocation!

Start with the small easy stuff

You don’t have to pack in one day, and in fact we recommend that you don’t leave it to the last minute to pack because that will only add to a stressful move. Start with the small stuff, like any consumables in your pantry and in your fridge. This is often an after thought, but the less you have to pack the better! So start emptying your fridge and pantry in the weeks leading up to your move. Next, we advise to concentrate on the storage rooms, sheds or spare rooms. Start organising and decluttering all the items in areas that you don’t frequent or use every day.

Moving is a great time to declutter any old magazines and CDs – we can’t tell you how many times we have moved and thought “why didn’t I just recycle all those magazines, I’ve never re-read them in years”. Be realistic, be a little brutal with your culling and make sure anything that is broken or chipped doesn’t make it into the box for the new house! Starting with the smaller rooms and organising your “stuff” into things you really need and things you can sell or part with will really help when you move into your new space.

Clearing label and pack with intention

We recommend trying to pack to the rooms you are moving to – this will make a big difference at when you get to your new property. Clear labelling will allow you to organise the truck and also help you understand what boxes are priorities to unpack. If you are not the type to want to move and unpack on the same day, we recommend you pack an overnight bag or suitcase with your essentials;  clean clothes, toiletries and towels. The last thing you want to do is have to randomly half open boxes looking for the toothpaste when you have spent the whole day moving. Think of the things that you might need immediately or items that you may want to unpack immediately like phone chargers, cups, snacks, soap and paper towels. Don’t forget to pack some snacks if you don’t have time to run to the supermarket.

Pack Smart

Often people think you have to pack fragile items with bubble wrap and newspaper – that’s not always the case and if you have lots to wrap, it can cause a lot of rubbish when you move into your new home. You can use your clothes, tea towels and pillowcases to help wrap any fragile items without the waste.

Don’t forget to redirect your utilities

Don’t forget you will need electricity or gas when you move into your home, so make sure you connect the utilities! You may want to also keep in mind that a new internet connection can take up to 7 days, so be a little savvy and book your internet move early so you can immediately stream all your favourite movies or access the internet. There are companies that help you redirect on your behalf so there’s one less thing for you to think about.

We can recommend Direct Connect who handle all aspects of the connections for you and you can contact them by clicking here
